Organised by the European Open Source Academy (EOSA), this webinar brought together leading experts to discuss the growing importance of open source hardware in Europe’s digital future.

While open source software has long been recognised as a driver of innovation, collaboration and technological progress, open source hardware is rapidly emerging as a strategic component for strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty and fostering a more open and resilient technology ecosystem. The webinar explored the opportunities and challenges facing open hardware adoption, as well as its role in supporting research, industry and next-generation digital infrastructures.

The discussion was moderated by Teresa Cervero García, Leading Research Engineer at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and a member of the DARE project, who guided the conversation on the evolving landscape of open hardware and its growing impact across Europe.

Together, the speakers examined how open hardware complements the success of open source software by enabling greater transparency, collaboration and innovation in processor architectures and computing platforms. They also discussed the importance of building strong European capabilities in open technologies to support future research, industrial competitiveness and technological independence.

For DARE, the webinar provided an opportunity to contribute to a broader conversation on the future of open computing in Europe. As the project advances the development of RISC-V-based technologies for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, initiatives such as this help raise awareness of the strategic value of open hardware and encourage collaboration across research organisations, industry and the wider open source community.
